Burdening the Spine

Each of the components has its role and they together allow us to move freely. A generalized description of the spine: intervertebral discs in a healthy spine absorb shocks and vibrations while the spinal bones provide the back with sufficient support. The joints of the spine facilitate the proper fit of the components and at the same time together with the ligaments take care that there is no "dislocation" of the spine. Nerves (nervous system) point to over burdening, over use or other damage, while muscles allow movement of the whole.

Each part of the spine is further composed of even smaller elements, which make the spine flexible, yet firm. In case of failure or injury of even only one of these elements, this is indicated by pain. The most common injuries of the spine are:

  • weakened back muscles,
  • loose or weak dorsal ligaments,
  • damaged intervertebral discs,
  • worn out joints.

Why does damage happen?

Damage is mainly due to overburdening and / or lack of exercise. In both cases, the spinal column starts to lose its flexibility and mobility becomes limited.

When and how is the backbone burdened?

The spine supports and carries the upper part of the body. For this reason, it is always burdened. The spinal load is measured by the pressure inside the discs, created by body weight, body posture and external weight (lifting objects). The burden on the spine is lightest in a laying position and is 25 kg. Interestingly, the pressure on the inner part of the intervertebral discs is higher when sitting than when standing. In a standing position, the pressure is increased to 100 kg, sitting at 175 kg.


How is this possible?

In an upright position (standing) part of the burden of the intervertebral discs is borne by ligaments and muscles. When sitting, the muscles and ligaments relax which increases the strain and pressure on the intervertebral discs. Additional pressure induces irregular posture. Due to the ever-increasing presence of sedentary work and longer periods of sitting muscles and ligaments become more lax. This increases the burden on other parts of the spine which assume the burden of the inactive parts, leading to injury. Short-term burdening (increased pressure) on the intervertebral discs is even welcome because, like exercise for the muscles, it helps strengthen the intervertebral discs, thus keeping them healthy. Excessive and / or permanent, over burdening of the intervertebral discs causes spillage of liquid contained therein. Gradual desiccation of intervertebral discs minimizes the distance between them, which may cause friction, trapped nerves or even a complete destruction of the intervertebral discs. Weakened muscles are the most common cause of back pain.
